Chennai: October 5 marks the birth anniversary of Thiru Arutprakasa Vallalar, the 19th-century Tamil saint, poet and spiritual thinker who emphasised compassion for all living beings, human equality and the principle of Jeevakarunyam. Vallalar was born in Marudhur, in present-day Cuddalore district, on October 5, 1823.
The occasion is being observed in Tamil Nadu as “Thaniperum Karunai Day”, reflecting the emphasis on Vallalar’s message of compassion. The Tamil Nadu government has also undertaken a series of initiatives to preserve and take his ideas to a wider audience.
International Vallalar Conference
The International Vallalar Conference 2026 was held in Chennai with the stated objective of taking Vallalar’s life, teachings and ideals to audiences across the world. The conference included discussions, exhibitions, cultural programmes and activities connected with Vallalar’s philosophy.
At the conference, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced a series of initiatives associated with Vallalar’s legacy. These included establishing a Sanmarga Training School at Vadalur, a herbal garden in Vallalar’s name, annual three-day celebrations around his birth anniversary and Vallalar Annadhanam Centres at Marudhur, Karunguzhi and Mettukuppam.

The house associated with Vallalar at Marudhur, where he lived, has also been taken up for renovation and preservation as part of efforts to protect places connected with his life.
Tiruvottiyur High Road named after Vallalar
As part of the initiatives announced to honour Vallalar, Tiruvottiyur High Road in Chennai was renamed “Vallalar High Road.” The move was announced by the Chief Minister in February 2026 in response to requests from Vallalar followers.
